• Have emergency supplies at hand.
• Have fresh batteries and flashlights available.
• Have a battery-powered, portable television or radio on standby.
• Have a wind-up or battery-powered clock available.
• Have non-perishable food and water stocked up.
• Have cash at hand, since ATM’s may not function.
• Have a cell phone or a hardwire, single-line telephone to make necessary phone calls.
• Ensure that you know how to manually open and close any electric security gates, garage doors.
• Ensure that you protect your computers, along with any other electronic equipment present, with a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) unit.
• Ensure that you have an emergency action plan (that your employees are familiar with) prepared.
• Ensure that you have an emergency plan prepared, for any employee who depends on medical equipment. Make sure that you have a back-up power source or transport available, in case it’s necessary.
• Ensure that you have a battery back-up system in place, to cater for smoke alarms that are wired to the electrical system of the building.
• Ensure that you have all your battery-operated exit lights checked so that they will work during an emergency.
• Ensure that you are aware of the operating requirements for your gas equipment so that you will know what will or will not work in the event of a power outage.
