A confined space requires a number of safety procedures in order to ensure that you are able to allow your employees to enter a confined space. Employers must create a written program, because it is one of the procedures we’re talking about. It should include the following:

• Implementation of the measures needed to stop unauthorized entry.

• Identification and evaluation of the hazards in the space, before you let an employee enter.

• Testing of the atmospheric conditions within the space before operations begin and monitoring of the space while entering.

• Performing of appropriate testing for atmospheric hazards such as combustible gases, vapors, oxygen and more.

• Establishment and implementation of the means, procedures and practices necessary to eliminate or control the hazards in the confined space.

• Identification of the employee job duties.

• Provision and maintenance of the personal protective equipment needed for safe entry and use in the confined space.

• Ensuring that there is at least one attendant stationed outside of the permit space for the duration of the operation within the space.

• Coordination of all entry operations when there are employees of multiple employers working in the same area.

• Implementation of appropriate procedures needed for summoning emergency and rescue services.

• Establishment in the writing and implementation of a system for the preparation, issuing, use and cancellation of entry permits.

• Revision of the establishment of entry operations annually and revision of the permit space entry program as needed.

• Implementation of the procedures that an attendant required to monitor multiple spaces, that need to follow during an emergency in one or more of the spaces.
