How To Report An Injury In The Workplace

No matter what type of workplace you are employed in, there is the likelihood that some sort of incident or injury may occur. There are a number of things you need to keep in mind when these incidents occur. One of the most important things is to report the incident to the appropriate committee in order to resolve the situation and prevent it from happening again. We’re going to show you how to do just that.

  • By phone or by any other direct means and within 48 hours, you need to immediately notify the Chief Prevention Officer, Health & Safety Contact Centre, the joint health and safety committee, and the union as well. You also need to notify a director, (via writing) that such an incident has occurred.
  • If you have an accident, fire explosion within the workplace, or even if there is some sort of violent incident within the workplace, in which an employee becomes disabled or in need of medical attention, then you must notify the joint health and safety committee of that. You must make this written report within at least 4 days of the occurrence of the incident. You may also have to give it to the director of the Chief Prevention Officer if it is required by an inspector.
  • You must notify a director if an employee has reported an occupational illness or that there has been a claim for an occupational illness with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. You must do this within four days of the incident and you must do this in writing, including prescribed information as well.
  • There needs to be a written report sent to the director of the Ministry of Labour, the joint health and safety committee and the trade union, informing them of an unexpected event or an accident which occurred at work, that could have possible resulted in an injury.
