Arc Flash and Basic Electrical Awareness

General information on course

Arc flash is the explosive release of energy when electrical current jumps the distance from one conductor to another, or when it jumps from a conductor to ground. That jump is called an “arc”. “Flash” refers to the release of light and heat energy. Participants must complete and pass this course to receive their record of training (ROT).

Duration:

Can be a half day depending on the size of the group and participant interaction.

Who Should Attend:

This program has been developed for anyone who is exposed to electrical and arc flash hazards as part of their day-to-day job activities.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

Upon the successful completion of this safety training program, participants will understand:

  • The legislative requirements (Government Regulations, CSA Standards and Manufacturers’ Guidelines and Principles);
  • The duties and responsibilities of workplace stakeholders;
  • Hazards related to electricity;
  • Arc flash hazards.

AFTER THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Define what arc flash is;
  • Know what leads to arc flashes;
  • Understand flash boundary calculations;
  • Know the requirements for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when dealing with situations where/when arc flashes could happen.

By means of group discussion, case studies and one-on-one instruction, participants will gain the ability to apply what they learn in this course.
