OTR – Offroad Tire Repair Certification

General information on course

This program is designed to give Off-the-Road Tire Technicians a basic working knowledge and general understanding of safe working practices for mounting and demounting OTR tires, wheels and rims and operating a 0-8 ton crane. This program complies with all applicable Canadian Federal, Provincial and Municipal Regulations. After successfully completing and passing both the theoretical and practical portions of this course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and be qualified to operate a 0-8 ton crane (commonly referred to as a Knuckleboom, Tire Handler or Manipulator).

Duration:

Three days (two days of classroom theory and one full day of practical application and evaluation).

Who Should Attend:

Individuals who supervise or mount and demount OTR Earthmover, Grader and Hauler Tires as part of their day-to-day work activities.

COURSE COMPONENTS

THEORETICAL COMPONENT:

After successfully completing this portion of the course, participants will understand:

  • The legislative requirements (Government Regulations, CSA Standards and Manufacturers’ Guidelines and Principles);
  • The duties and responsibilities of all workplace stakeholders;
  • Service vehicle maintenance;
  • 0-8 ton crane operation and safe hoisting and rigging practices;
  • Site hazard evaluation and preparation;
  • Hydraulic bead breakers, rams and specialty tools;
  • Mounting and demounting one-piece, three-piece and five-piece wheel assemblies;
  • Torque values;Tires, rims and valve assemblies;
  • Proper lock-out/tag-out procedures.

PRACTICAL COMPONENT:

To successfully pass this course, participants must demonstrate the following:

  • The capability to conduct a site hazard evaluation and prepare a safe work area;
  • The capability to conduct a pre-inspection of the service vehicle, crane and rigging equipment;
  • The ability to properly rig a load to be lifted;
  • The ability to execute a safe lift – including travelling with and placing a load;
  • The ability to demonstrate the safe use of a hydraulic bead breaker, ram and all specialty tools;
  • The capability to conduct a proper lock-out/tag-out procedure;
  • The ability to mount and demount a one, three, and five piece wheel assembly.
